First Annual NYC Poker Run

For many NYC members, a ‘poker run’ may be a streak of good luck at the gaming tables. For hardcore power boaters who drive go-fast boats capable of crazy speeds over the water, a Poker Run is a chance to show how fast their boats can run. But for those in the NYC powerboat community, [...]

Before You Head Out – Think “3”

Before you head out on any voyage, short or long, you need to think ’3′ – about three things: 1) Is your boat safe? This should be obvious – through hulls all closed, safety gear, flares and so on and not expired, anchor “at the ready,” dock lines set just in case, sails ready (if [...]

Message from the Commodore

Dear NYC members, Can you believe the crazy temperature fluctuations? Normally at this time of year Anne and I are busy tapping Maple Syrup at our ski chalet in Grey County, the locals are predicting a good season, it’s just been too cold and we haven’t had the daytime warming effect that encourages sap runs. [...]

A Late Summer Trip Across the Lake

What a Reach!!! “The wind in the wires told a tattle-tale sound, and a wave broke over the railing” Gordon Lightfoot. The late summer sail across to Port Dalhousie was good – mostly 7.2 knots due to a steady and strong west wind and the slippery bottom of SoundScape. This was the third crossing of [...]

From the crew decks

The NYC AGM 2012 has come and gone, and a fine slate of candidates have been elected or acclaimed to various positions.  Good luck to them all, and my thanks to them for their service to the club. I would like to address a comment made from the microphone at the AGM, implying that crew [...]

A Spitfire Story

In February of this year, we purchased a J Boat J/145 racing sailboat based in Long Island Sound and brought her up to the NYC this spring to replace my Catalina that I had also sold during the winter. We renamed the boat ‘Spitfire’ from its previous name of ‘Swirl’. I have been asked several [...]

Don’t forget your charts!

We heard a rumour recently that the marine unit has been cracking down on people boating without charts. We can’t verify the cracking down rumour, but member John Cangardel did some research for our collective benefit. John didn’t have to go very far. Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Guide mentions charts and publications right here: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/tp-tp511-beforeyougo-647.htm#carry_and_use_nautical_charts_and_publications “…you must carry the following [...]

Sailpast 2012

Sailpast 2012 took place on Saturday, June 2.  Sailpast is the one day that all of our members should be out,  dressed and ready to sail. Unfortunately the weather did not co-operate. After a couple of wet, windy days the weather for Saturday did not look much better. As it turned out, the rain held [...]

Commodore’s Comments

August 20th, 2011. Commodore’s Cruise to Mimico This year, Vicki and I were well behaved the week before the Commodore’s cruise and the weather gods were most pleased and so we were thus blessed with a lovely weekend. While we did venture far afield – using Diane and Jonathan Bamberger boat for a rabbit start – [...]

Sailpast 2011

Chris Murray, the morning OOD on Sailpast, thought that he was back in Halifax.  The fog was thick enough that the trees on the north side of the basin were gone. Fortunately the fog dissipated and by the afternoon there was sufficient breeze that the fleet was able to go out and enjoy a true [...]

Weather Resources, from Ron Bianchini

I was at Ron Bianchini’ss fantastic weather-focused Sailors’ Night. At that talk, he promised to provide a document listing all the resources he mentioned during his talk.  Here it is: Weather Resources for Boaters March 2010 Edition , all eighteen pages of it. It’s a rich resource for boaters seeking to improve their weather knowledge. Stephen [...]
