2011 Quarter-Ton Brew Race

The tradition continues…
On Tuesday September 13th, the NYC Quarter-Ton (Level) fleet held their 24th annual Brew Race and Charity Auction under a beautiful September sky and gusty fall winds. This mad-cap end of season celebratory race is a favorite NYC tradition of high jinx and fleet camaraderie and a serious source of funds charitable fund-raising.
Following the preparatory skippers meeting, the 1/4 Ton Fleet and invited guest boats lined up at the inner basin wall awaiting the arrival of their designated drinkers (DD’s) to hop aboard their respective yachts and race around the pre-determined course. They started their race with a chug-a-lug at the bar.
Fully rigged but lightly tethered, the mad dash down the stairs quickly turned into an all-out scramble to be the first boat out of the inner basin gap. With a variable North Westerly breeze, the fleet set out to sail the course; to the Dufferin Mark, then the Gibraltar Mark and then back to the club.
Under a 15 plus knot breeze all of the fleet except one opted to sail under whites. This extremely variable breeze added to the excitement of determining who would be the 1st DD back to the bar. After lowering a sail or two (or not), each boat’s DD jumped onto shore and headed into the club to finish their 2nd beverage and the race.
Superb upwind sailing in particular ensured that Sheila would earn the right to have their name engraved on the Brew Race Trophy for a 2nd straight year. Second place went to Topaz and third to Hullabaloo.
After an enjoyable Greek kabob dinner and a chance for participants to review the exciting exploits of the race, the charity auction began. The 1/4 fleet had previously and unanimously voted to continue their support of the Broad Reach Foundation; an organization dedicated to helping to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged youth through sailing as a medium. Since 2004, 25 youth have benefited from the ¼ Ton Scholarships purchased with the funds raised.
The auction, conducted by seasoned auctioneer and ¼ Ton Alumni Jeff Schwartz, netted $2,100 from items generously donated by UK Halsey, Evolution Sails, Genco Marine, West Marine, The Rigging Shoppe, Mason’s Chandlery and Fogh Marine as well as various individual and corporate donations from within the 1/4 Ton Fleet.
The NYC ¼ Ton fleet would like to thank all for their generosity including those Club members who joined in the auction. All ensured the evening was a resounding success. We look forward to our 25th anniversary next year and your continued support.
