2013 NYC Quarter-Ton Brew Race
October 28th, 2013 @ 07:45 PM EST by admin

The Fleet keeps on rocking at 40 years young

On Tuesday September 10th, the NYC Quarter-Ton (Level) fleet held their 26th Annual Brew Race and Charity Auction under a beautiful September sky with brisk fall winds. This zany end of season celebratory race is a favorite NYC tradition of high-jinx, camaraderie and a generous source of NYC Quarter-Ton fleet charitable fund-raising.

Following the preparatory skippers meeting, the Quarter-Ton fleet and guest participants are aligned in the inner basin wall by the white crane awaiting the arrival of their designated drinkers (DD’s) to hop aboard their yachts and race around the pre-determined course. The race starts with a Molson libation at the bar.

Fully rigged but lightly tethered, the mad rush down the back stairs quickly turns into an all-out scramble to be the first boat out of the inner basin. This particular fall day, Mother Nature throws the Q-Ton Fleet a better knuckle ball than Phil Niekro ever did…the traditional heavy breeze from due west is instead from SSW all day and the western basin is one big washing machine; essentially we have two races instead of one. Whomever is likely to sail through the confused waves in the western basin first, is a heavy favorite to win the race overall. The fleet sailed the course; the Dufferin Mark, then the Gibraltar Mark and then back to the club through the designated channel markers.

Superb seamanship skills through the Western channel basin ensured that Sheila (Dave Richards) would earn the right to have their name engraved on the Molson Cup Trophy. Second place went to Topaz and third to Hullabaloo.

After an enjoyable buffet in the restaurant, the charity auction began. The 1/4 Ton Fleet had previously and unanimously voted to continue their support of the Broad Reach Foundation; an organization dedicated to helping to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged youth through sailing as a medium. Since 2004, over 25 youth have benefited from the ¼ Ton Scholarships purchased with the funds raised.

The auction, conducted by seasoned auctioneer and ¼ Ton Alumni Jeff Schwartz, netted $1,617.50 from items generously donated by UK Sailmakers, Evolution Sails, Genco Marine, Fogh Marine, The Rigging Shoppe, Sob Stad-Barrie, Island Canvas, The Nautical Mind, TD Bank, Des Techs,Caynes Super Housewares, Mr. Taylor Bey-Steamwhistle Breweries, Mr. Alan Carlisle as well as various other individual and corporate donations from within the 1/4 Ton Fleet and NYC membership.

The NYC ¼ Ton fleet would like to thank all for their generosity including those Club members who joined in the auction and staff for flawless execution in the dining room. All ensured the evening was a resounding success. We look forward to our 27th anniversary next year and your continued support.
