Many of you were involved in NYC sponsored education events this season. You may have graduated from our Introduction to Keel Boat Sailing program and now actively participate in our Crew Banks. Perhaps you finally got your Harbour License and no longer feel nervous when you see the Marine Unit out on the water. Or you took the Marine First Aid course, or the North U seminar on Racing Rules, or the CYA Coastal Navigation course, or the… well you get the idea, it’s been a busy six months.
And not just for adult members. The NYC Sailing & Racing School has had a busy summer as well. Our sailing school kept 5 sailing and racing coaches busy since July 1st. Several racing teams went to CORK in Kingston and got great race experience.
The only thing there wasn’t much of in our S&RS curriculum this year was Adult Dinghy Sailing. Where are all you aspiring Adult Dinghy racers?? We have a great fleet of 420s waiting for racers!
So now, as we turn our attention to the fall and haul-out and lay-up (sob), thoughts turn to what else the Education Committee might do for NYC members. Already, we have a proposal for conducting another Coastal Navigation course starting just after haul-out. Could it be good preparation for your winter bare-boat charter plans? Someone suggested a refresher course on engine and general boat winterizing strategies conducted before haul-out or shortly thereafter. Interested in saving a few bucks by doing some basic stuff yourself? Let us know. Then, there’s always Celestial Navigation with Nick de Munnik who may conduct the course again.
And don’t forget Sailors’ Night! Tell us what you’d like to see, who you’d like to hear, what topics are of interest to you. Let us know.
What else? You tell us. Contact the office with your suggestions or email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and share your thoughts on how we can advance the quality of nautical knowledge at NYC .
And finally, the NYC Education Committee will be meeting soon, so stay tuned to Weekly Update emails for the next Committee meeting date.
