Paper charts and publications getting a little dusty? They remain an essential tool for navigation and trip planning, even with GPS available. This course covers how best to combine paper publications with electronic methods. We review reading paper charts (scale, distances, symbols), cover basic plotting, how to integrate with GPS (setting waypoints & routes, transferring positions), and interpreting the information provided. Remind me again, what are those red and green things in the water? What does (vertical) chart datum really mean? Why should I care about horizontal datum? Why do my autohelm, my GPS, and my steering compass all tell me different things? What unique capabilities does GPS provide? What are its limitations? What's my backup if it fails?
