The Fleet in Action

Following the Brew Race, the Charity Auction is scheduled to start at 8:00 pm in the NYC dining room. All National Yacht Club members, family and friends are welcome and encouraged to come watch the start of the race and/or attend the Charity Auction/valued priced dinner-please join in the bidding for the products donated by our local merchants and the ¼ Ton Fleet members and their employers. You’ll find good value in these items. All proceeds will be donated to support The Broad Reach Foundation. About the ¼ Ton (level) Fleet’s Brew Race The 1/4 Fleet Brew Race was created by two long standing NYC Senior members and ¼ Ton Skippers, Harvey Cracknell and the late Gerry Kedey. Gerry got Molson’s Brewery to fund the event trophy, hence the first reason for naming this race the “BREW RACE”. The event starts at the bar. A crew from each of the boats racing (the designated drinker or DD), downs a cold Molson’s beer and then proceeds in haste, to his/her boat which is fully rigged and waiting on the NYC inner basin wall. On their DD’s arrival, each boat casts off to compete in the sailing portion of this annual race. The on-the-water portion of this race ends with each boat sailing back into the inner basin where the respective DD leaps ashore, quickly heads upstairs to the bar and finishes the race by downing another cold brewsky. The DD who first downs this 2nd brewsky waiting for them at the bar wins the race for their boat, earning the skipper and his crew the prestigious ¼ Ton Fleet Brew Race trophy, the Molson Cup. These start and finish libations are the second reason for calling it The Brew Race. Just in case you were asking About the Broad Reach Foundation Through our continued support of the Broad Reach Foundation, we in the NYC ¼ Ton (level) Fleet are proud to help make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children. We feel that through their experiences and ability to participate in Broad Reach sailing programs at the NYC, we’re able to show them a satisfying and rewarding alternative to the streets; something that will positively influence their lifestyle as they mature. The feedback that we get from confirms our expectations and adds to our fleet enthusiasm and participation for this, our Annual Brew Race and Charity Auction. The NYC ¼ Ton Fleet, as well as the NYC, have been recognized over the years by the City of Toronto Parks and Recreation Department with “Community Champion Awards” as a result of our contributions to Broadreach in the form of NYC Sailing Scholarships. While our Charity Auction has been quite successful, we feel that with your participation, it will be even more so, by allowing us to award additional scholarships. Come down to the Club on the 10th, and participate. Co-Chairs 2013 Brew Race and Charity Auction, NYC 1/4 Ton (Level) Fleet
