NYC’s John Brunt, with crew Andrian Pustam and Rod Gardner sailed “Devil with a Blue Dress” to fourth place in a 56 boat fleet at the Shark Worlds held at Kingston Yacht Club on August 24-31. Congratulations to John and his crew. They sailed consistently all week counting 4th, 9th, 8th, 9th, 9th 11th, 7th, and 3rd place finishes in the 9 race regatta to finish only one point behind the third place boat.
Top three finishers were:
1st – Heavy Fuel, Kingston YC , Robert Davis, 40 net points
2nd – Tiger Niles, Bay of Quinte YC, Peter Aker, 57 net points
3rd – Shark Poop, Nepean SC, Johan Koppernaes, 59 net points
NYC was also represented by Josh Wiwcharyk (Cap’n Crunch), Quest (Dave Thomas) and Spirit (Lionel Mandel). Lionel, who was sailing in his first Worlds, blew away the completion to finish first in race #4. Full results are available here.
With the exception of one day, when racing was postponed on shore waiting for wind, the weather was typical Kingston with big breezes very day. On the day of the long distance race the wind speed was 25 Knots with gust reported to 50 Knots – real Shark weather. This made for a very exciting ride particularly on the leeward leg, which was dead downwind through a shipping channel between two islands, with lots of big waves to ride.
The 2013 Shark Worlds in Germany and 2014 NYC
The next Shark Worlds will be held in Germany in September 2013. The NYC will host this prestigious event in 2014. The goal of the NYC 2014 Shark Worlds Organizing Committee is to make this the biggest and best Worlds ever. Planning is already under way for this event, which should be one of the largest regattas that NYC has hosted in many years. A small army of volunteers will be required to make a success of this event. If you would like to volunteer to help in running this regatta please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
