Following the very successful Shark Gold Cup regatta hosted by the NYC in September 2010, an approach was made to the President of the International Shark Class Association (ISCA) to host the 2014 Shark World Championships. With the support of Commodore Henry Persig and Vice Commodore (Fleet) Bob Magtanon, a formal letter of application was sent to ISCA in March 2011.
NYC’s application was tabled in June at the AGM of ISCA, held during the 2010 Shark Worlds in Beaconsfield, Quebec. Dave Thomas, Fleet Captain of NYC’s Shark fleet, presented our proposal to the Board, following which unanimous approval was received for NYC to host Shark Worlds in late August 2014.
Now the Hard work begins. A committee has already been established with Dave Thomas as Regatta Chair, Chris Clarke as Vice-Chair (Sailing Activities), Josh Wiwcharyk as Vice-Chair (Non-Sailing Activities) and Rob Burns as Vice-Chair (Finance). We hope to attract in excess of 60 boats, with entries from Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the United States. This promises to be one of the largest regattas hosted by the NYC in recent memory. While National’s very active Shark fleet will play a primary role in organizing and running this event, there will of course be the need for a small army of volunteers to make this prestigious regatta another NYC success story.
