A keen group of NYC members met at the club on November 8th to create the NYC Education Committee. The purpose of the meeting was to develop a mission and mandate for this new committee and to agree on who would chair the various sub-committees.
Here’s the structure of the Committee along with who will chair each sub-committee
Sailing & Cruising Skills: Chairs – Svetla and George Topouzova
Sailing and Racing School: Chair – Ron Jenkins
Racing Skills: Chair – Wendy Fischer
Marine Skills & Knowledge: Need chair
Sailors’ Night: Chair – Ann Mitchell
License Programs: Chair – Samantha Glass
Information about the sub-committees
Sailing and Cruising Skills will offer a variety of educational and training programs for those who are new to sailing as well as those who want to improve their core skills in a sailboat. Whether for racing or cruising, the courses offered will be, in part, based on input from NYC members. Let us know your areas of interest and we’ll try to create a course.
Currently we plan to offer the following in 2013:
- Introduction to Keelboat Sailing
- CYA Basic Cruising
- CYA Coastal Navigation
What else do you think we should include?
Please comment at the end of the post.
Sailing & Racing School has been a highly successful part of NYC for many years. Ron Jenkins and his dedicated colleagues manage a complex array of youth and adult learn-to-sale and learn-to-race programs. NYC racers regularly represent our club at regattas around the lake.
This sub-committee offers many different programs over the summer including
- Youth Learn-to-Sail
- Opti Sailing Camp
- CanSail programs
- Youth Learn-to-Race
- Advanced Youth Racing program
- Spring Racing program
- Adult Dinghy Racing
The Racing Skills sub-committee offers NYC members a great opportunity to learn from some very accomplished racers. Why not talk to Chair Wendy Fischer or her committee colleague Jamie Spotswood about your areas of interest. So far there are plans for some (hopefully all) of the following:
- Rules & Tactics
- Racing Strategy
- Race Management
- Race Boat Crewing
- Match Racing
And what better way to help winter fly by than to spend Wednesday night at the NYC Sailors’ Night? Ann Mitchell and her able sub-committee members work hard every year to get really interesting people to come and tell their stories, teach us a few things and entertain us along the way. Throw in a great meal and you’ve got a Sailors’ Night experience. Stay tuned for announcements about the Sailors’ Night line up for 2013!
Marine Skills & Knowledge
This is a new sub-committee aimed at offering a broad range of courses dealing with all things Nautical. We need a Chair to help coordinate course that members want. We’ll be offering courses like
- Marine Diesel Maintenance (A customized course for NYC members)
- Marine First Aid & AED training
- Crane Operation
- Shop Use and Safety
- Docking Skills
- … and other topics of interest to you (let us know)
Of course we will continue to offer mandatory License Programs such as
- Toronto Harbour License
- VHF Radio Operator License
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card
All of these programs are managed through our capable Manager of Member Services, Samantha Glass.
So Education 2013 is about to get underway. Let us know what you’d like to see added to our curriculum. Step up and join a sub-committee. Meet some new people. Learn new stuff. Have fun.
