The University of Toronto Canadian Collegiate Regatta
October 31st, 2011 @ 09:19 PM EST by admin

The University of Toronto Sailing Club held it’s annual Canadian Collegiate Regatta on the weekend of September 24th and 25th, 2011 at the National Yacht Club (NYC). The regatta hosted teams from six different post-secondary schools across Ontario and Quebec:

  • The University of Toronto
  • The University of Ottawa
  • McGill University
  • McMaster University
  • Queen’s University
  • HEC Montreal

The event was raced collegiate-style (no spinnaker, no trapeze) in club 420s, belonging to the NYC. Each school that attended sent two teams (with the exception of McMaster University), one of which raced in A-fleet, and the other in B-fleet. Each fleet was scored individually according to the low-point scoring system in order to identify the top sailors at the event. Total team scores were determined based on team’s combined score in A and B fleets. Thanks to the efforts of our P.R.O., Sean Hewson, and mark set volunteers, Michael EgbertsKirk CavellGabrielle Blais-Jones, and Erin McNeill, we were able to get eight races in for both A and B fleets over the course of the weekend.

Day one of the regatta was a warm, sunny day that saw fairly light wind with the breeze topping out at around 5 knots. The racing in A-fleet was very tight throughout as McGill ended the day with 6 points, followed closely by U of T with 7. B-fleet was even closer together as the Universities of Ottawa and Toronto each finished the day with 13 points, trailing Queen’s University with 8 and McGill University with 7.

Day two saw the same degree of sun coupled with a significant increase in wind pressure to an average of about 15 knots, which proved to be more challenging given the inability to use trapeze in collegiate racing. The point spread within each fleet increased throughout the day and the school with the best overall performance at the regatta emerged as McGill University took 2nd place overall in A-fleet and 1st place overall in B-fleet.
