2011 Learn to Sail for all Ages, Licencing, Navigation, Knots, Splicing & Weather Courses now online!

Its time to register for National’s awesome selection of winter & spring courses! Tie yourself in Knots or learn how to splice with Knotmaster David Lambert. Predict your own weather with weather pro Ron Bianchi. Become an expert of the phonetic alphabet during the Restricted Radio Operators Course. Be safe in local and Canadian waters with the Power Vessel Operator & Pleasure Craft Operator Card Course. Get the kids on the water this summer with the new Opti Sailing Camp and do it yourself in Adult Dinghy Learn to Sail. Many courses are open to Non-members so don’t forget your friends. Knots – Open to Non-Members

National Yacht Club is pleased to welcome back Professional Knot Tyer and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers (North American Branch), David Lambert. Join David for an adventure in knots! Learn to construct a selection of 10 general purpose and time-honoured holdfasts. Learn the applications of each and how to use them together.

Handouts & take home “practice line” included. Please note: Students must supply a sturdy pair of scissors.

Course Date: Thursday March 3, 2011 – 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Fee: $50 plus HST

Splicing – Open to Non-Members

Learn the time-honoured tradition of rope splicing. Construct a loop and back splice with step-by-step hands on instruction. Use this knowledge to repair or update your dock lines. Take home your very own Splicing Kit including ½” fid, 12” pusher, tape, needle, whipping twine, marking pen & 20’ of line. Only 10 students per class, so register early.

Please note: Students must supply a sturdy pair of scissors and a pair of needle nose pliers.

Course Date: Thursday March 10, 2011 – 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Fee: $50 plus HST

Basic Introduction to Meteorology for the Mariner – Open to Non-Members

Join Ron Bianchi, a longtime sailor with over 20 years of experience in applied meteorology and forecasting, for a mind-opening encounter with the science of Meteorology and how to use it to your advantage! This course includes three nights of weather instruction focusing on how the weather works (meteorological theory), weather systems and wind and using real time data (meteorological practice). Course materials included.

Course Dates: Thursdays March 17, 24 & 31, 2011 – 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Fee: $95 plus HST – Course materials included

Restricted Radio Operators Permit – Maritime (VHF) and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) Endorsement – Open to Non-Members

The Restricted Radio Operators Certificate course is offered over three evenings, with instruction the first two nights and a written exam on the third. The registration fee includes the textbook, student’s CD, and DSC simulator. This certificate is a federal government requirement to operate any marine VHF, HF, or SSB radio.

Participants who already have their Restricted Radio Operators Certificate and would like to add the Digital Selective Calling endorsement may register for the two-night DSC endorsement course. This includes instruction the first evening and a test on the second. The registration fee includes the textbook and DSC simulator. DSC participants are welcome to attend the first night of the full course as a refresher. Both courses are instructed by the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron.

Fee: $75 plus HST

Digital Selective Calling Endorsement* – Open to Non Members

Wednesdays April 13 & Thursday April 21, 2011 – 7pm to 9pm

Fee: $50 plus HST

*DSC participants are welcome to attend the first night of the full course as a refresher.

Toronto Power Vessel Operators Permit (Harbour License) – Open to Non-Members

The Practices and Procedures of the Toronto Port Authority state that a person operating a powerdriven vessel in the waters of the Port and Harbour of Toronto must be in possession of valid marine certification recognized by Transport Canada and the Toronto Port Authority. The Toronto Port Authority Operators Permit for Power Driven Vessels is a one evening course involving an on-the-water test followed by in-class instruction and a written test. The National Yacht Club provides a 16-foot powerboat for the use of students during their on-the-water examination. This course can also be taken in conjunction with the Pleasure Craft Operator Card course.

Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) – Open to Non-Members

If you operate a pleasure craft with a motor for recreational purposes, on Canadian waters, the Competency Of Operators Pleasure Craft Regulations require you to carry proof of competency at all times. All operators of any vessel with an engine, regardless of size, must carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. This one evening course involves in class instruction followed by a written test. The course is instructed by an accredited certified S.P.A.R.K. Start instructor with the course set out by the Canadian Yachting Association.
