Special Sailors Night – Book Launch
Brian Hancock – Grabbing the World
Official Canadian Launch!
Thursday May 6, 2010 8:00 pm
Club Dining Room
Pushing 50, unemployed and unemployable, professional sailor Brian Hancock found himself at a crossroads.
After 30 years of racing sailboats around the world he was looking for a new challenge, one that would draw on his experience as a sailor, adventurer and author. He formed a partnership with an old friend and together they launched a brand new around-the-world yacht race, the Portimão Global Ocean Race.
Grabbing the World is a heartfelt account of what it takes to have a dream, to pursue it against all odds, and to prevail. The journey takes him back to his roots in South Africa. It takes him to the highs of success and the lows of betrayal. Most of all it is a voyage of self discovery. In this multimedia presentation Brian brings his book to life with slide, music, video and his engaging narrative.

Movie Night
MORNING LIGHT

Fifteen young sailors... six months of intense training... one chance at the brass ring. This documentary tells the story of a group of intrepid and determined young men and women, on the cusp of adulthood, as they embark on life's first great adventure. Racing a high-performance 52-foot sloop in the TRANSPAC, the most revered of open-ocean sailing competitions, the crew of "Morning Light" matches wits and skills in a dramatic 2300 mile showdown against top professionals. From their earliest training sessions in Hawaii conducted by world-class teachers through their test of endurance on the high seas, they form an unbreakable bond in the process of becoming a singular team that is greater than the sum of its parts. Written by Walt Disney Pictures.

Sailors' Night
Wednesday March 17, 2010 7:30 pm

Richard Mitchele
Richard (or D) Mitchele was born and bred in Toronto where he and his family still actively campaign an eight meter. Five years ago, while living in Halifax, he got involved in offshore racing. Since then he's been averaging over 5,000 ocean miles per year as a bowman on both coasts and in the Caribbean in races that include Newport to Bermuda, Long Beach to Cabo (Mexico), Marblehead to Halifax and several Rolex regattas. He has thousands of offshore delivery miles and a bunch of good stories to tell. In late March, he and three NYC members will be heading to LA for an 1,800 mile jaunt up and down the west coast on a 70-foot turbo sled.

Ron Bianchi - Understanding The Wind

Ron Bianchi - renowned meteorologist and sailor as well as long time friend of the NYC joins us again for a highly entertaining and thought provoking session on wind and its influence on our sailing.
Understanding the wind - covers the basics of how wind is generated on many scales in our atmosphere and how all these scales interact to finally produce the local wind in your area. Easy-to-understand conceptual models of wind behaviour and how it’s generated along with its interactions with land and water will be covered. You will gain a better appreciation and increase your knowledge to recognize what the wind is doing and why. The talk will also cover how computer wind forecasts are generated and sources for them on the internet and finally, how to best use these forecasts before going out, either cruising or racing.
