National Yacht Club is pleased to announce the return of our popular Coastal and Celestial Navigation Series. Prepare for your upcoming off shore adventures with instructor Nick de Munnik as he plots your course through the muddy waters of Coastal and traditional Celestial Navigation. Each course runs for 4 evenings, plus two optional daytime Saturday workshops.
Coastal Navigation
Upgrade your basic understanding of navigation and make better use of your GPS! Prepare for the moment your electronics take a holiday. Topics include chart work, plotting fixes, use of GPS, electronic charts and plotters, radar, buoyage systems, tides and more! All in four, two hour evening sessions and two optional workshop sessions.
Coastal Navigation Course Schedule:
Tuesdays 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm - January 19, 26, February 2 & 9, 2010

Celestial Navigation
Learn the traditional way to navigate at sea. This uncomplicated course is a must for anyone venturing offshore and a great back up for electronic systems. Sessions cover both basic theory and practical use of this primary navigation method in four, two and a half hour evening sessions and two optional workshop sessions.
Celestial Navigation Course Schedule:
Tuesdays 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm – February 23 March 2, 9 & 16, 2010

Textbook
These courses are based on the required textbook “Get Home Navigation”. Topics include all the aspects of Navigation, both coastal and celestial in a single 150 page fully illustrated book. A worthwhile addition to any ships reference library.

Knots

National Yacht Club is pleased to welcome back Professional Knot Tyer and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers (North American Branch), David Lambert. Join David for an adventure in knots! Learn to construct a selection of 10 general purpose and time-honoured holdfasts. Learn the applications of each and how to use them together. Handouts & take home “practice line” included.
Please note: Students must supply a sturdy pair of scissors.

Splicing
Open to Non-Members
Learn the time-honoured tradition of rope splicing. Construct a loop and back splice on 3 stranded twisted rope with step-by-step hands on instruction. Use this knowledge to repair or update your dock lines. Take home your very own Splicing Kit including Swedish fid, 12” pusher, tape, needle, whipping twine, marking pen & 20’ of line. Only 10 students per class, so register early. Please note: Students must supply a sturdy pair of scissors and a pair of needle nose pliers.

Basic Wind Strategy for Racers
Open to Non-Members

Understanding the basic principles of wind's behavior on the course is key for any new racer. This course covers the basics such as: what makes wind, gradient wind, gusts and lulls, lake breezes, basic cloud interactions with wind, understanding the weather map, predicting changes with the course wind, basic rules of thumb, locating sources of real time wind data with examples from Nationals own race course! All student materials included.

Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Training
Open to Non-Members

Emergency First Aid, CPR and AED (automated external defibrillator) techniques, taught in an interactive environment, for individuals who want a basic understanding of First Aid, CPR and AED for the workplace and home. This course results in a RED CROSS 3 year certification in Emergency First Aid, CPR Level A and AED certification. Take home manual included.

Basic Introduction to Meteorology for the Mariner
Open to Non-Members

Join Ron Bianchi, a longtime sailor with over 20 years of experience in applied meteorology and forecasting, for a mind-opening encounter with the science of Meteorology and how to use it to your advantage! This course includes three nights of weather instruction focusing on how the weather works (meteorological theory), weather systems and wind and using real time data (meteorological practice). Course materials included.
