The National Event – Postponed for 2015

It is with regret that we are postponing NYC’s dinghy event until 2016. The decision was forced by an overlap with the Pan-Am games and a very full summer schedule that leaves no weekend open for us to shift our regatta. The National Event is a multi-class dinghy regatta hosted by the NYC every year for the past five years. Typical fleets attending include 2.4mR ,International 14, 29er and Club 420. Please look for The National Event to return July 8 and 9, 2016.

History of The National Event

The National Event was first held in the summer of 2010 with a mandate of then Vice Commodore Fleet, Bob Magtanong, to provide quality racing for skiff competitors. Since it’s inception, the event has continue to grow with 50 boats attending last year’s regatta from clubs within the GTA as well as a number of sailing schools outside of the Toronto area. It is a good midsummer event for skiff competitors, who in the past have used this event as a benchmark in fine-tuning their racings skills for events held later in the summer. With this being the fifth year anniversary of The National Event, the invited fleets include 29er, 49er, Club 420, 1-14, Contender and the 2.4mR classes.

This is a multi-generational event, one of the few to be held on Lake Ontario. It offers the opportunity for Youth sailors to interact with competitive athletes a generation or two older than themselves, reconfirming that quality competitive skiff sailing is available well into all ages of life.

Onsite registration will be offered the evening of Friday, July 11th and again prior to the Skipper’s meeting on Saturday, July 12th. In keeping with the traditional format of previous years, course racing will be held south of Ontario Place on Saturday, July 12th and Sunday, July 13th. A barbecue for competitors, coaches and parents will be held after racing on Saturday, July 12th and awards will be presented after racing on Sunday, July 13th.
